1959 Topps Baseball Sample Pictures
The '59 BB set contains 572 cards. Card #1 is Ford Frick, one-time sports writer and
National League president who in 1951 was elected Commissioner. Notable rookie cards include
Carl Yastrzemski, Felipe Alou, Bobbie Allison, Sparky Anderson, Bob Gibson and Jim Perry.
Most of the card backs featured the player's personal information, his lifetime stats and some
personal note of interest. Each also featured a cartoon detailing some fact about the player.
The Mantle card pictured is #10, one of three cards featuring the Yankee great in this set. I believe this
may be the last card I bought to complete the set and was certainly the most expensive, setting me back
about $85. I'd grade it as a VG.
George Anderson is long-time big-league manager "Sparky" Anderson. This is his rookie card. "Marvelous"
Marv Throneberry achieved fame as one of the original Mets. His ineptitude was later mocked on the Lite
beer commercials.
The last twenty-two cards of the set show '59 All-stars as selected by The Sporting News magazine.
